Special D shaped thumb turn

The thumb turn is a special ‘D’ shape. This has been design to make it easier to operate, with better grip and easier turning. This is therefore ideal for people who are elderly, have arthritis or have limited hand movement.

How to measure what size cylinder you need

The easiest way to measure what size cylinder you need, is to purchase the MAX6MUM SECURITY cylinder gauge. This fits together as shown above. However you can also use a ruler. To find out what size cylinder you need, follow the below instructions:

1 - Put the centre of the cylinder gauge (B) into the retaining screw hole on your door (there is no need to remove the retaining screw).

2 - Adjust the lever (A) on the gauge to the end of your door handle (do not measure what the exisiting cylinder is at it may be the wrong size and cause the cylinder to overhang, which makes it vulnerable to burglars).

3 - Read off measurement (A) on the gauge.

4 - Repeat steps 2 and 3 for side (C). This will be the side your thumb turn is on.

5 - You will now have 2 measurements for (A) and (C) in mm. If your measurement is an odd size (not divisible by 5) i.e. 38mm, round it up to the nearest 5mm, so this would be a measurement of 40mm.

If measurement (A) is 40mm, and measurement (C) is 50mm, the cylinder size you would need is a 40/50T cylinder (smallest measurement size usually comes first in the listing) which is 90mm overall. The T in the product code indicated what side the thumb turn is on. If measurement (A) is 50mm, and measurement (C) is 40mm, the cylinder size you would need is a 40T/50 cylinder.

Cylinder Security Features

27% of ALL Burglaries Involve Lock Snapping!

Lock snapping is a method burglars use to gain entry to gain entry to a property by exploiting a vulnerable door cylinder lock. By using a simple tool, burglars can twist and break a door handle backplate to expose the end of the cylinder. The weakest point on a cylinder lock is near the centre screw and if too much of the cylinder protrudes from the door, the cylinder can be clamped, twisted and broken. This completely exposes the door’s locking mechanism and a burglar is then able to turn the cam, which turns the lock. It's simple, fast and unfortunately becoming a very common method of attack.

UAP+ euro cylinders have a sacrificial cut line on the outside side, so when force is applied the cylinder will break away to the sacrificial cut line only, leaving the locking mechanism intact and not allowing access to the property.

Bumping is a method where locks are tricked into opening as the believe the correct key has been inserted

A specially crafted bump key is used, and through striking the key into the lock, it caused the pins to jump up and down, and eventually line up so the lock can be opened. There is often little trace that a lock has been bumped (only through forensic testing) and insurance companies will often not pay out as they believe that the door has been left open. UAP+ cylinders use a patented anti-bump system to prevent this from happening. It is a truly formidable barrier to lock bumping.

4 x hardened steel anti-drill pins are in the external side of the cylinder, 2 in the plug and 2 in the barrel. These require a special drill bit to break through. Common drill bits will have no effect. Plus all moving pins are nickel plated hardened steel 50 HRC minimum.

A minimum of 3 anti-pick pins are in the external side of the cylinder which makes it extremely difficult for a common burglar to pick the cylinder.

Fitting Instructions

Removing Your Old Cylinder

1. Place your key into the cylinder and open your door.

2. Use a screw driver to remove the retaining screw from the cylinder (located underneath the latch and in line with the cylinder.)

3. Turn the thumb turn approximately 30 degrees either clockwise or anti-clockwise (either at 10 or 2 o’clock.)

4. Apply slight pressure to the opposite end of the cylinder so the cam (black latch in the centre of the cylinder) lines up with the cylinder body.

5. Slowly slide the cylinder out of the door towards yourself.

Fitting Your New Cylinder

1. Turn the thumkb turn approximately 30 degrees either clockwise or anti-clockwise (either at 10 or 2 o’clock) so the cam lines up with the cylinder body.

2. Slide the cylinder into the door.

3. Place the new retaining screw into the door’s fixing hole, and use a screw driver to tighten so it is secure.

WARNING – DO NOT over tighten the retaining screw, as it will place strain on the cylinder cam and cause it to not function correctly.

DO NOT USE A DRILL OR SIMILAR TO TIGHTEN THE RETAINING SCREW

UAP cylinders guarantee security! With a UAP cylinder installed you’ve not only secured your home and your safety, but you’ve also secured yourself a £5,000 anti-burglar guarantee.

What does this mean?

The anti-burglar guarantee means that if your home gets broken into via the lock, and you have a UAP+ cylinder installed, in the event that an insurance company won’t pay out – UAP will. They are offering a guarantee of up to £5,000 to cover the cost of the stolen goods.

All you need to do to ensure your guarantee is activated is register your cylinder using the serial number under ‘product registration’ on the UAP website.

How to register

Registering is simple. If you are registering a UAP cylinder, on your cylinder keys will be a key ring (pictured above). Click here to visit the registration portal, and simply enter the serial number on the key ring below and fill out your details.

What you need to make sure you have installed

To meet the ‘anti-burglar guarantee’ criteria you must have one of the following cylinder combination installed with the UAP+ cylinder:

uap-cylinder-and-handle-card

UAP+ 1 Star Kitemarked Cylinders WITH a UAP 2 star Kitemarked door handle

uap-cylinder-and-escutcheon-card

UAP+ 1 Star Kitemarked Cylinders WITH a UAP 2 star Kitemarked escutcheon

If you have any of these combinations of door hardware fitted, and are broken in to and your insurance company refuses to pay out, then UAP will – simple!

Why does the above combinations have to be installed?

The above combinations add up to 3 star Kitemark security. The British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark is a highly recognised quality mark that confirms that a product has been thoroughly tested and checked, and proven to meet a recognised industry standard or need.

Unfortunately many of the door cylinders that are installed in homes all across the country are not Kitemarked, and a majority of these cylinders have not been tested to any standards or security tests! And what’s more they are not protected against the most common burglary attacks, meaning they can be broken in to in a matter of seconds.

The BSI Kitemark tests the cylinder for a number of different elements including safety, attack resistance, key related security , durability, corrosion and temperature resistance. For more information please click here.
